Dragon Races

Most dragon races gain bonuses to the numbers in the Dragon class table (for instance, starting hit dice, breath weapon DC, Fear save DC, base attack bonus, etc.). These racial bonuses are simply added in at 1st level in Dragon, and are carried through the rest of the levels normally. Dragons also gain the usual bonuses to from high ability scores, such as save bonuses and bonus languages, as well. Furthermore, all dragon races gain certain spell-like abilities as they age, and these abilities (being dependent on the race) are not listed in the Dragon class table because that table contains only what applies to all dragons. Dragons gain the listed spell-like abilities upon attaining the given age category (i.e. level 4 for Very Young, level 7 for Young, etc.)- treat them as if they were additions to the class table.

The ability score bonuses listed in the tables for each race are added immediately upon reaching the given age category, and are cumulative with previous bonuses (which is why so many of them look so similar). For instance, a Young Adult Black Dragon has +8 STR, +6 CON, +2 INT, +2 WIS, and +2 CHA.

As noted in the description of the Dragon class, each dragon race has a normal racial alignment, which most members of that race have. Dragons of that race are not required to have the racial alignment, but life among their own kind often becomes a lot more difficult for them if they don't. Minor (one-step) alignment differences usually are barely noticed until the dragon is an adult, and so those are more common; greater differences bring progressively greater ostracising from peers. While it is not impossible for a good-aligned chromatic dragon, or an evil metallic one, to reach adulthood, it is so rare as to be virtually unheard of. Such unusual individuals always need protection outside their race if they are to survive, and many eventually leave their birth race behind to become advanced dragons.

Dragons with the Alternate Form ability use a special form of the Polymorph spell which allows the dragon to revert to its natural form as a full-round action without it counting as a use of the power. Each use of the ability has an effective Permanent duration; it lasts until the dragon wishes to change form again. The dragon is only allowed to assume forms of the creature type noted with the Alternate Form entry in the table, and cannot assume forms larger than Medium-size unless noted otherwise.

Finally, most dragon races have an experience penalty to gaining levels- this uses the standard "effective character level" mechanism. For instance, a dragon with an ECL of +1 is treated as a 2nd level character while still at 1st level, and thus begins with 1000 experience and must go up to 3000 before gaining its first level.

Brass, Greater
  • Overview/History: When the Greater White dragon clan progenitor, Cryomek, declared her clan's existence before the Elder Dragon Council, she did so by demanding the Council's surrender and subjugation to her. Astonishingly, and frighteningly, she and her assembled clanmates proved able to back up their demands with force, and the surviving Elders were thrown into crisis. Desperate to find the power to defeat the new menace before she could undo countless millennia of dragon heritage, the Elders did the unthinkable.
They called upon the gods, and begged for their aid.
Though most of the gods at the time were unwilling to interfere in dragon affairs (in accordance with a pact which had existed between dragonkind and themselves since time immemorial), or simply wished to watch the events unfold and deal with the fallout, Damok felt differently. Though he was one of the originators of the pact itself, he had no desire to see dragon civilization upset or destroyed by such a catastrophe, especially since it would leave an evil clan as absolute rulers of dragonkind- most likely leading to a war between the dragons and the remaining peoples of Taera. Therefore, in defiance of the pact he himself helped create, Damok acted. In order to upset dragon society as little as possible, he decided that the best way to fight this new clan was by creating another new clan of his own to fight them; once the purpose of their genesis was fulfilled, they could join dragon society like any other clan and continue to help guard it against any similar problems which might arise in the future. Having seen the creation of the Greater Whites, he knew that both psionic training and the mutative properties of constant Polymorphing were key factors in the new clan's birth, as well as a fierce drive to overcome inherited weakness.
All these factors and decisions led to Damok's act of intervention. Since the Whites were the weakest clan of chromatic dragons, at least before the advent of the new offshoot, he decided that the most appropriate place to begin his new clan from was with the Brass clan- the weakest of the metallic dragons. After stealing the magical blade Rhyscriok, which Cryomek had used to help create her new clan, directly from the matriarch's own lair, Damok found an unusually quiet and thoughtful young Brass male named Gerrianthor who was willing to give up his previous life to bring the new clan into being. Knowing that it would take much time to train and create the clan, despite the immediate need for its existence, Damok took Gerrianthor several centuries into the past- many centuries even before his own birth. Training the young Brass in the psionic ways with the help of a member of the mysterious Priory itself, Damok used the powers of Rhyscriok to alter the dragon's genome just as Cryomek had previously used it on her children. After over two hundred years of secret training, Gerrianthor was ready to begin.
With the god's help, he found the smartest, strongest, and noblest Brass females that Taera had to offer, and mated with each of them- asking to raise some of the children on his own. Though this was (and continues to be today) very unusual behavior for a Brass male, the new mothers were all too happy to comply with him, though he never explained to them the reason for his strange request, nor how he chose the eggs he did. Though the eggs he chose always seemed random to his mates, Gerrianthor was in fact quite deliberate in his choices- he took away all eggs that his psionic abilities told him had psionic potential themselves, as well as some that Damok (who was frequently along for the choosing- though never revealing himself to the mothers) suggested that he take. With this army of eggs, Gerrianthor trained a new generation of Brass dragons that were not only more powerful magically than their forebears, but also had innate psionic might. Over several tense centuries, Gerrianthor trained his clan and impressed the dire need hanging over them into each and every new member, with all of them carefully staying out of the sight and knowledge of dragonkind until the fateful year approached once more. Thus it was that in 2461, a mere two days after Cryomek and her Greater White clan routed the Elder Dragon Council and the Guardians of the Vale, Gerrianthor the Elder returned to the Dragon Vale himself- leading an army of Greater Brass dragons ready to defend the civilization of dragonkind with their lives.
During the fierce fighting that followed, the most powerful of the Greater Brass clan were slain, but their new power proved to be more than a match for the Greater Whites who had usurped the sacred territory. Gerrianthor himself died fighting Cryomek, mortally wounding her in the process; with their matriarch and most powerful member dead, the morale of the Greater Whites broke, and they fled. The restored Elder Dragon Council declared the surviving Greater Brass soldiers to be a new clan of their own, and granted them the status of heroes among dragonkind for as long as dragon civilization should last. With their existence no longer secret, the Greater Brass dragons who had survived the trip to their ancestral home- and those who had not made the trip at all- emerged into the world, and spread themselves far and wide in order to continue the watch for new threats.
  • Personality: Greater Brass dragons have a clan purpose, and all hatchlings are brought up with an understanding and appreciation for that purpose. This essentially polarizes the personality types found within the clan into two camps: those who accept the clan's responsibility to guard the rest of dragon society, and those who don't. Those who accept the responsibility tend to be very serious-minded, rarely if ever cracking (or even laughing at) jokes which poke fun at the clan, their purpose, or their history. Those who don't, become even more extreme versions of Lesser Brass dragon stereotypes, and either ragularly make light of the very same things the "responsible" ones never laugh at, or simply ignoring them and pretending they don't exist.

Gray
  • Overview/History: At some point during the early decades after the Greater White dragons were thwarted in their attempt to take over draconic civilization, when the surviving Greater Whites spread across the face of Taera to ensure their clan's long-term survival, one young pair of them opted to settle in a swamp rich with strange life after noting the apparent absence of other sentients and top predators. What escaped them during their investigation was the reason for the swamp's lack of normal inhabitants- the Ancient radiation emanating from the ruins of a battle fought before the Annihilation. Before they realized the danger, the radiation caused mutations in both of them, ruining their formerly sleek and perfect forms. Humiliated by the change, the pair decided to stay in isolation in the swamp rather than seek a way to reverse the changes elsewhere, and during the next two centuries they produced several clutches of eggs. Though most of the eggs died before the hatchlings within could be born, a few survived, and these were trained in the use of their powers by their parents. After those two hundred years, the original pair of settlers finally succumbed to the deadly radiation and died, but those of their children which had survived were naturally resistant to its effects and did not go down so easily. Their lifespans were cut short by the terrible mutations afflicting them, but over three more centuries of (in)breeding the mutations gradually stabilized and gave the children new powers.
Then came the Year of Madness and the ensuing War of Return. The newly-returned Mind Flayers tried to establish beachheads and bases all over the world during the first years of the War, and one fateful day a band of them tried to establish a base in the (apparently) deserted swamp where the once-White dragons lived. Though their powers were fearsome, the powers of the dragons proved fiercer still, and the Mind Flayers were quickly overwhelmed. Though this event was at best a minor skirmish in the scope of the greater conflict taking place in the world outside the swamp, it was like a lightning catalyst to the budding clan of mutants who lived inside it. For the first time, they became curious about the world beyond their birthland, and set out to explore it. Inevitably, the mutants came into contact with unmutated dragons, and through them learned of the dragon civilization (which had long since grudgingly accepted the existence of the Greater White dragon clan). Though the mutants had always considered themselves part of the Greater White clan, their horrifically altered forms and powers disgusted the scions of the original clan, and the Greater Whites disowned them. Undaunted, the mutants decided to declare themselves to be a new clan, and since one of their common mutations dulled the once-lustrous white of their scales to a dirty gray (the better to blend in with the marsh), they opted to call themselves the Gray dragon clan. Since the dragon civilization was still recovering from the consequences of the last time they refused to recognize a new clan, the Elders granted sanction to the newcomers (over the objections of the Greater Whites present), and the Gray dragon clan was born.
  • Personality: .
  • Racial Alignment: Neutral Evil.
  • Physical Description: Gray dragons present a bizarre and terrible appearance. Even as hatchlings, they have numerous flaps and rotting folds of scales and skin, which give them the appearance of decomposition even when in the full flower of healthy life. Their scales are dusky and mottled gray in color, with various patches being darker or lighter gray depending on the individual. The symmetry of their bodies is also slightly off-kilter; while not enough to significantly affect their movement or balance, it adds to the feeling of "wrongness" that most other people have when confronted with a Gray dragon. More importantly, Gray dragons grow both a third eye (placed between the first two) and an extra pair of legs- giving them six altogether.
  • Range/Lairs: Gray dragons can establish lairs in any sort of terrain, but in practice they always pick areas saturated with dangerous radiation if it is possible to do so. Gray dragons are aware of their horrific appearance, and part of their racial psyche is just as disgusted with it as most other creatures are- so they enjoy the solitude that living in such dangerous territory affords them. The fact that the radiation tends to keep annoying dragonslayers away is another bonus in favor of Radiation Zones. Finally, it is thought that perhaps some distant genetic memory of the radioactive marsh that effectively gave birth to their clan still exists today even in Gray hatchlings who have never even seen a swamp, and this memory manifests itself as an instinctual longing for radioactive terrain in general.
  • Relations: While the Greater White clan that they came from is the favorite scapegoat of modern dragon society, the actual Gray clan is generally kept at a distance. Between their generally disagreeable natures, their terrible appearance, and the regions they prefer to live in, the Grays are regarded with fear, horror, pity, or loathing depending on the disposition of the dragon making the judgement. Regardless of individual attitudes, however, the official stance of most dragon clans is to leave the Grays alone, and for their part the Grays are happy to be left that way. The only four clans with which Grays have any regular relations (read: trouble, since the "relations" in question usually amount to attacking each other on sight) are the Opals and Radium (who compete for territory with them), the Greater Whites (who are disgusted with them and want to wipe the mutant relatives out), and the Greater Brass (who nominally consider them to still be part of the Greater White clan, and therefore enemies to be vigilant against). Grays do not normally have relations with any nondragons, except to fight/kill/eat them; it is rare that a Gray dragon even bothers to talk to nondragons that enter its territory before simply attacking with all its power.

Pink
  • Overview/History: According to the stories told by the oldest Pink dragons, their clan was born in the loving union of a Red male and a Greater White female during the 200 or so years following the bombshell declaration of the Greater Whites' existence. Given the ridiculous unlikelihood of either a Red or a Greater White dragon learning to love at all, let alone a member of such a polar opposite clan, and further given the Pinks' collective penchant for dramatic embellishment and artistic license, most scholars aware of the story dismiss it outright. Even so, the tale as told offers several intriguing clues that fit the facts too well to be so easily tossed aside.
First, since most evil-aligned creatures consider love a weakness and do their best to avoid or suppress it, then if one takes the story at face value, it is most reasonable to assume that the pair who mated were not evil-aligned. This would have led them to be outcasts from their own clans, beyond a doubt, and probably hunted as well (especially the Greater White one, since that clan was constantly hunted for centuries after their failed coup attempt). Also, Pink dragons in general are not evil-aligned, which is a very strange trait for a chromatic clan to exhibit; though some cynical scholars attribute their racial personality to lunacy resulting from a conflict between the two sides of their inner nature, it could also be simply a clan tradition carried down from its true progenitors.
Second, Pink dragons are today and (so far as anybody knows) always have been nomadic, using magic and cleverness to carry their hoards and homes with them wherever they travel. Such a nomadic existen
